More about our honoree Joe Duran:
Joe S. Duran is the Founding CEO of Stanislaus Equity Partners (STEP), a Community Development Corporation established in 2021. Joe also currently serves as COO of City Ministry Network, an established and trusted faith-based Community Network Weaving Organization. Joe Retired in October 2020 from Self Help Federal Credit Union as its Executive Vice President. Since Self Help’s founding in 1980, it has provided more than 6 billion of financing to over 74,000 families of modest means, small businesses, and non-profit organizations across the country. Joe joined Self-Help in 2009 when as CEO he led the locally established Community Trust Credit Union into a partnership with Self-Help, out of Durham North Carolina, and established a new Credit Union, Self-Help Federal Credit Union. Joe has been a driving force in growing Self Help Federal Credit Union from the original Community Trust 3 branch, 12,000 members, and $45 Million in deposits to (as of 2020) 32 branches, 75,000 plus membership, and 1.2 Billion Credit Union that has consistently ranked in the top 5 of fastest growing Credit Unions in the Country with branches located in SF Bay Area, North Central Valley, South Central Valley, Los Angeles, San Diego as well as branches in Chicago and Milwaukee.
Joe was recently Honored as the 2023 Champion of The American Dream by Stanislaus State University and The Porges Family Foundation. He has received many awards and acknowledgments for his service to Latino and other underserved communities, including the “La Raza” Award and “Amigo of the Year” Awards from El Concilio for Spanish Speaking, “Hispanic of the Year Award” by the Stanislaus County Hispanic American Society, “Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility, Credit Union Diversity” and “Cultural Diversity” Awards from the California/Nevada Credit Union League.
Joe is co-founder of The Latino Business Association, is on the Board of Directors of The Stanislaus Community Foundation, Community Transitional Resources, CCEDA (California Community Economic Development Association and R-Three (Rehabilitation-Restoration-Respite) an innovative housing developer from Monterey County. He has served on The Boards of Redeemer Church, Modesto, Access Plus Capital (a Fresno Community Development Institution), Opportunity Stanislaus Business Alliance, and Stanislaus Community Hospice Foundation.
Joe was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and moved to Oakdale California, in 1960 graduating from Oakdale High School. And attended Cal State Stanislaus for 4 years.
